I WANT TO BELIEVE.

Read this story about little boys in Japan finding a mini UFO. But don't those aliens know that they're violating the prime directive?

OH WELL>>it'll still make a great premise for my forthcoming borderline fanfic childrens scifi comic about ALIENGS FROM OUTER SPACE.

always flopped out

ohhhhh barcelona.

greetings

it has been a bit, officers. never fear, I come bearing touching animal video:

I just got back from a great weekend in VT with Doctor Bashir. Mozart festival, swimmin' cliffs, raspberries, mmmmmm.

Now it's back to the old grind for another week and a half--hopefully I finish the two books I'm working on.

I am somehow finding a way to keep the time filled...

if you ever doubted that the original star trek was completely gorgeous, then please watch Uhura sing a space jazz ballad about interstellar seduction. Just look at those colors.

(it's like they have human mouths!!)

OH MAN, I love this song. If I was to make a playlist of great songs that also may be entertaining to children, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" would definitely be on it. And so you don't have to watch the stupid video that accompanies the song, here are some lion picures!

TRIBBLE TRIBUTE

One of my greatest regrets in life is having missed the opportunity to buy a REAL PROP TRIBBLE at the Star Trek Adventure ride in Miami in '97. I was obviously a loser then, because I also remember taking math homework to an Eric Burdon concert that my parents had to force me to go to. O, MISTAKES OF MY YOUTH.

to ease the pain, it's an episode of the original Star Trek series that every layman should see....

thats right, it's THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES:

Star Trek - The Original Series Video - The Trouble With Tribbles - CBS.com

and a litte tribble tribute because it's sunday:

So heres another apparant internet meme that I haven't heard of until now, the literal lyricas to the music video for Total Eclipse of the Heart. Thing thing about internet memes is they're usually actually hilarious, and they also usually make you feel bad about your life.

Thanks my friend Nike N, henceforth Gainan as played by Whoopi Goldberg on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

{SIDE NOTE: Sometimes I feel like we are all essentially disconnected from rest of the world. Then I think of Whoopi Goldberg. FOR SERIOUS, GUYS. Just cradle her image in your mind, the voice, the clothes, the lack of eyebrows, and be overwhelmed by the complexity and interrelatedness of existence.I'm allowed to say that because it's about Whoopi.}

ANYWAY>>>

This Total Eclipse of the Heart parody is funny:

But the song is kind of great. It's like how I'm actually moved by "Don't Ever Fucking Question That."

a tribute to tiny tim

after watching SO MANY tiny tim youtube videos yesterday, and posting that great excerpt from his would-be children's show, The Icecaps are Melting, I had to go right home and paint a picture of that genius weirdo Tiny Tim.

The song that made him famous:

(the best youtube video ever was removed--tiny tim and eleanor barooshian singing "I got you babe" with Eleanor on the low part....but heres a little one man duet to ease the pain)

this one's a little creepy, friends.

during our delicious lunch at le pick up (check it out if you're in montreal!! (7032 rue Waverly)) my great new friend Melissa and I were talking about the wild and wonderful world of animals. Specifically cuttle fishes.

Please enjoy these crazy animal vids

(this one is a little long but trust me, it's worth it. and there are owl stats like if it was an owl version of american gladiator)

(hint: to find your own awesome vids I suggest searching "amazing cuttlefish video")

all about seth

I love Seth. He has for years in his basement been building a cardboard city named Dominion.
I could totally pass for his effeminate son, too. Maybe I'll be Seth for Halloween.

Borrow George Sprott from me or read the original serialized strips here, but I warn you it's not the same as cradling a 12x14 book in your lap.

to be continued.....

I'm no photographer, but these are some good things.
not exactly a tribute vid, but such a great star trek moment--STEPHEN HAWKING GUEST STARRING! alongside Einstein and Newton.

so many cartoonists are obsessed with their little kitties. John Porcellino is one of them. This is his cat Maisie Kukoc. And she's not the only one! There's also Bruno, Seth's cat, the kitty in Cecil and Jordan in New York, and the ghost cat in 87 blvd des Capucines by my favorite Nicholas Robel.

all these comics and all these kitties have me thinking about my friend Victoria M. Salt of this earth, I love her.

SHE IS SPOCK!

innernet

I think all four of you who read this blog have probably seen this already, but here is a great little article about Paul Giamatti and the son of the brother of famous cartoonist and Ohioan Harvey Pekar. You know, paths intersecting and all of that.

Sidewalk Phantoms

And while I'm at it (on nytimes.com....)

Here is a great scrolling comic by Maira Kalman, author of The Principles of Uncertainty, which you should make me lend you. It is great, a little much at times, but really great, and a quick, quick read. I haven't done much research on it, but I think the book may have started from a blog...anyways, This article has a George Washington theme:

Time Wastes Too Fast

And here's a similar sort of thing on Dinosaurs! I really think this scrolling webcomic art book idea is the way to go. As soon as I have a working scanner I'm going to start uploading some bits and pieces.

jose

(visor added to protect the innocent)

My fellow intern and only bud, Jose, left on Tuesday. Awkward pizza and sad goodbyes were had all around. Jose does the super great comic, End of Eros, as well as tons of other cool stuff. Once we watched True Blood together. Often we ate lunch in shitty parks. This is his website.

Until we meet at some comic convention in the future, Jose!

(is it creepy that I stole this photo from a certain other blog?)

you're welcome

can you believe this is only one of a series of nosferatu dance videos by donelly13?

I just finished a careful rereading of George Sprott by 'picture novelist' Seth. It was so incredible. Monumental almost in the same way as East of Eden, not with the same scale, of course, but with that depth and attention to the passing of time. I remember somewhere in the first 20 pages of East of Eden, a description of the dirt of the Salinas Valley. George Sprott was much the same. More on Seth, later.

here's ::the complete:: original nosferatu, for those of you who aren't afraid of bumps in the night....

Geordi

its tribute vid sunday!

Thats right, it's the first weekly (or as long as my attentionspan holds out) star trek tribute video sunday. For those of you readers who don't watch star trek, I hope you can still enjoy the message of hope, optimism, and the despair of living with your mother that is an integral part of each and every youtube mashup tribute video.

THIS LITTLE MERMAID/STAR TREK TNG MASHUP VIDEO IS NO EXCEPTION

I'm not through with you yet.

SOONER RATHER THAN LATER, RIGHT GUYS?

an oldie but a goodie, I couldn't resist. that Data, he always keeps us guessing.

BUT NOTHING COMPARES TO THIS. My newest, best youtube find.

an incredibly literal Star Trek: The Next Generation Fan video made to the song Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I'm not messing around. You have to watch it, whether you're a fan of Star Trek or a fan of Queen. Nothing can beat the phaser blast/explosion sequences during the guitar solos.

the city
fireworks

(editors note: I don't know why they all turned out this sort of blurry.)

I just remembered the events of July 3rd last year. Doctor Julian Bashir, our friends Alice G and Sarah B, and myself went out to the Shedd Aquarium and stole a bottle of wine from these drunk and grown up versions of ourselves, (if we grow up to be event planners for dentists associations!)

and we sat up on the edge of the wall and I took so many pictures of those fireworks and everysingle one was blurry like my vision. Julian, do you remember walking home? All those times we walked home?

Yesterday I thought, This is a good summer, but maybe the Doctor is right, when I think back to the summer of my life, I'll think of my summer in Chicago. We half knew it even then.

Maybe tonight I'll make a memory soup and play all the songs of last summer and drink all the Bud of last summer, and read over the words of last summer and wish, Doctor Bashir, that you were here to reminice with me. It's nice being alone but I miss.

Story Songs + Uhura

Nothing warms me in the cold vacuum of space like a good ol' fashioned story song. They just don't write them like they used to. One of my favorites was introduced to be my by good friend Sarah B. back on Starbase 52, Pirate Jenny sung by Nina Simone.

HOWEVER

while perusing youtube recently I discovered this amazing version by Lotte Lenya. It's in german, but there are excellent subtitles and her voice just warbles.

The whole thing reminds me of my friend Grace C, who will henceforth be known as Uhura, Chief Communcations Officer, USS Enterprise. We communicate often via subspace, and I always look forward to her transmissions.

Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge, reporting for duty

Hello, officers. I am Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge. I suppose I should tell you a little bit about myself. I'd wanted to join Star Fleet ever since I was little. I was born February 16, 2335, and I am the chief engineer on the USS Enterprise. My job consists of scanning and cleaning original art work, copy editing, and basically just reading comic books everyday. In my off time I eat one of three things, only: yogurt with granola, grilled cheese and tomato soup, or some mediocre tofu dish. In approximately two months time I will be returning to Star Fleet Acadamy to complete a minor in landscape architecture. I'd love to help Keiko with the Arboretum on deck 6!

The life of me, Lt. G LaF, is not always an interesting one, so please, bare with. I may have remodulated the warp core in the 11th hour with the help of a holodeck program and a little boyish charm, but I also log many a hour calibrating the replicator's backup drive, running tests on the anti-positron emitions of the teleporter, and running plenty of little errands for my bosses at Star Fleet Central Command.

It's enough to drive any humanoid to the Synthohol.

But what can I say, I love the USS Enterprise.

Welcome Aboard!
